A new MSc in International Human Resource Management, launched by Cranfield School of Management, is attracting applications from across the globe.

The first students start their studies in January 2005 on the two-year modular programme which involves six week-long residential periods at Cranfield each year.

The new MSc is designed for mid-career human resources (HR) managers, or experienced professionals considering a career in HR. To date applications have been made by prospective students of 17 nationalities.

Programme Director Dr Michael Dickmann says the programme will meet a growing need: The international demands on HR leadership positions are increasing which means a solid understanding of global HR issues, combined with relevant experience and practical skills becomes paramount.

The new Masters programme is also being welcomed by those working within the HR industry. Frances Wilson, International Manager from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) said: The Cranfield MSc in International HRM is based on cutting-edge professional and academic knowledge, insights and skills. It fits ideally into a globalising economy and generates many benefits for individuals and organisations.

Milton Ives, Senior Manager in Group Human Resources at HSBC, believes the qualification will help HR personnel respond to the challenge of working on an international scale: This new Masters programme will provide aspiring and current international HR executives with the core skills and knowledge needed for effective HR management in the global environment, he said.

The programme, which will accept up to 40 students each year, will increase their understanding of global HR issues and help them to acquire the skills and knowledge needed to practise in an international context. Students will also gain and implement research skills while carrying out a project, and develop broad business knowledge in such areas as the international aspects of economics, marketing and accounting and finance.
