New Legislation May Not Mark End of Line for Telesales Industry

Manchester-based recruitment agency, beRecruitment Limited, is advising employers that the recently-reformed corporate telephone preference service legislation may not be such bad news for telesales-led businesses after all.

Manchester-based recruitment agency, beRecruitment Limited, is advising employers that the recently-reformed corporate telephone preference service legislation may not be such bad news for telesales-led businesses after all.

At first glance, it appears that those companies who rely on telesales, such as recruitment consultants, could be seriously affected by this legislation*. However, beRecruitment argues that companies just have to be more intelligent in the way that they open doors.

According to Carole Fossey, Managing Director of beRecruitment Limited and governing council member of Manchester Chamber of Commerce, employers need to be more creative when it comes to sales and marketing. Carole explains: Companies need to look at things in a different way. People hate to be ’sold to’ anyway, so companies should be looking at ways to make potential customers and clients want to call them instead.

Carole explains there are many things for sales and marketing people to try before throwing in the towel. Below is a checklist of points to consider:

What steps are you taking to raise your company profile?

Is the marketing focus where it should be - on what your customers’ needs and interests are, or is it on your own features and benefits?

Do you know what your customer issues are?

Do you target the messages to your audience? (The HR department will have different issues and interests to the finance department).

Have you identified the sort of clients you want and do you have a strategy for each of these clients?

Could you hold a seminar to provide clients with something of value, such as free information or demonstration products?

How much does your website drive traffic to you?

How good is your contacts network?

Does everyone in your organisation understand who you want your clients to be and have they got any contacts / ideas?

If your clients are not ringing you for advice, why not and who are they ringing? (You should be profiling yourself as the ’consultant’ or ’expert’).

Carole adds: Far from being a death-knoll for the sales and marketing industry, I think the TPS is a wake-up call for everyone in business. The market is saying - don’t call me and don’t send me stuff that is of no use to me - maybe it’s time we listened and tried to provide a service that our clients actually want rather than the one that we think they should have.
