MyPeopleBiz Blog: Maximise your recruiting power with career sites

The autumn leaves are beginning to fall and that means the hiring-season is almost here! So, it’s time to get ready for this year’s hiring peak and increase your online application rate.

The autumn leaves are beginning to fall and that means the hiring-season is almost here! So, it’s time to get ready for this year’s hiring peak and increase your online application rate.

And one of the easiest ways of doing this is by adding a fully customised career site to your corporate website in order to educate visitors about your company, entertain them and make them return time and time again.

What exactly is a career site?

Most people think of it as a job search site where candidates can find vacancies and apply for them. However, I believe that career sites can be defined in a slightly different way, as an online resource that builds and facilitates the internal career development process for employers and employees.

Career sites provide candidates with the sense of what kind of company you are and who they’ll be working with. They are basically the candidate’s introduction to your organisation and can be customized to include company branding, one or several assessments, links to existing career options information, professional development resources, details about current employees and their career progression with the company, customised recommendations or tips on applications and interviews, interactive content and media such as video, blogs, micro-sites, or landing pages as well as social media channels to create unique messaging for the different targeted audiences.

Especially designed and implemented to help employers make the most of who they are as a company, career sites can create a more positive experience for both the job applicants and recruiters. They enhance the employer brand and attract more prospective candidates who can see job listings, apply for jobs directly from this section of the website or leave speculative job applications until an appropriate job comes up.

But, in order to benefit from all these advantages a career site should:

  • be intuitive to use
  • be search engine optimised  for organic search to maximise visibility and attract those top candidates before other competitors
  • create ways for visitors to share your site with others
  • give visitors realistic photos and videos of what it’s like to work there
  • make the application process short and easy

A career site is usually fully integrated with an online applicant tracking system giving you access to a multichannel recruitment platform that can bring together employers, candidates, referrers and recruitment agencies all in one place. This will save you time and money and will allow you to engage with candidates and stay connected with them in a meaningful way throughout the entire hiring process.

There are lots of great career site designs on the web but one of my favourites is The Children’s Trust career page.

The leading charity for children with multiple disabilities it’s known for its beautiful mission and their career site is no exception.

I like it because it’s simple and straightforward, giving candidates an immediate look at what positions are open, so they can make the best career decision. Their career page speaks what they care about – helping children with complex health needs and by visiting it candidates can easily learn about the charity’s values, vision and mission, their working environment and the rewards and benefits they offer. Overall, The Children’s Trust has a great employer brand and the experience on this page is seamless.

As you can see, in order to attract the best talent you’ll need to do more than just list your jobs. What would you like to see if you were applying for a job? You’ll probably want to see more than an updated list of jobs and get a grasp of the company’s culture. So, take advantage of what technology has to offer these days.
