Monster Employment Index UK Declines in May, Continuing Three-month Downward Trend

Monster Employment Index UK showed reduced online hiring activity for the third consecutive month

Online job recruitment activity and related employment opportunities across the United Kingdom declined sharply in May, as the Monster Employment Index UK showed reduced online hiring activity for the third consecutive month. The Index fell seven points to 108 in May, driven by fewer opportunities for workers in sectors such as hospitality and tourism; education, training and library; and healthcare, social services and personal care. Nevertheless, the Index remained six points above its May 2005 level.

During May, a significant decline in online opportunities was observed within the hospitality and tourism sector. Demand for workers in the education, training and library sector also decreased markedly. Meanwhile, offers for workers in the healthcare, social services and personal care sector fell by 12 points. In contrast, the Index showed a considerable 10-point increase in demand for plant and machine operators and assemblers in May. All UK regions registered fewer online job opportunities last month, with East Anglia registering the sharpest rate of decline, falling 15 points.
