Facing increasing competition for leadership talent, Americaís companies are investing in new efforts to retain their executives, however, the results of these initiatives are decidedly mixed, according to a recent survey conducted by ExecuNet, the executive business, career, and recruiting network.

While the survey of 1,597 employed executives with an average annual salary of more than $206,000 reveals that 61% are satisfied or very satisfied with their current job, professional fulfillment varies significantly by function, with MIS/IT and Sales executives the most likely to be unhappy.

ìThe increase in overall job satisfaction from 52% last year is particularly striking when you take into consideration the demands and challenges executives have faced over the past year,î said Dave Opton, CEO and Founder of ExecuNet. ìClearly, sustained job growth at the top of the employment market has many companies rethinking their approach to executive retention.î

Among the 39% of corporate leaders who are dissatisfied with their current job, most cite boredom and lack of advancement opportunities for their malaise.

Top Five Reasons Executives Are Unhappy At Work

1. Limited advancement opportunities (12.8%)
2. Lack of challenge/personal growth (12.3%)
3. Compensation (11.7%)
4. Stress Level (7.7%)
T4. Job Security (7.7%)

ìWhile stress and job security concerns are mounting, boredom and a shortage of opportunities for advancement remain key drivers of voluntary executive turnover,î explained Mark Anderson, President of ExecuNet. ìGiven the current outlook for the executive employment market, companies capable of keeping their leaders engaged will be well positioned for strong growth.î
