Nova Contracting Director Marcus Green comments: “The new Chancellor has a real opportunity to demonstrate that the Government understands modern working patterns and recognises the vital role of temporary workforce to the UK economy, when he gives his Autumn Statement on November 23.
“The fact that the Prime Minister has ordered a top level review on employment rights and practices, including the 1.7 million contractors working in the UK, shows a genuine interest in getting this right. Theresa May has referred to “keeping pace with the changing world of work” and this is a chance to give temporary workers a well-deserved break.
“In the wake of the Brexit vote and fluctuating reports on the future health of the UK economy, it’s tough enough for freelancers and contract workers. They don’t need HMRC or the Treasury putting further obstacles in their way?
“There has to be a balance of course and protection against potential abuse of the status rules. But the Government has said it values entrepreneurial and creative spirit – that is the hallmark of the contracting community and must be supported and rewarded.”
