Legal & General comment on Stress Awareness Month

Vanessa Sallows, Benefits and Governance Director at Legal & General Workplace Health & Protection, comments:

“The importance of campaigns such as Stress Awareness Month cannot be understated when figures show that one in four people in the UK, will experience a mental health problem in any given year. Our recent research showed that fewer than 10% of employees who have experienced depression, unacceptably high levels of pressure or anger, feel able to talk to their manager or superior about it, and 20% felt they couldn’t talk to anyone about a mental health issue.

“Businesses across the UK need to create mentally healthy workplaces and strive to break the stigma of discussing mental health at work. Employees need to be encouraged to talk about mental health issues in the same way they would a physical health problem, and this will only be achieved through health and wellbeing strategies which are open, inclusive and flexible.”

“Legal & General is launching a major initiative this year to encourage more conversations in the workplace about mental health. We aim to help reduce the stigma around mental health so that it’s discussed as openly as a physical health concern.”
