MICHAEL MORAN, CEO of leading talent management consultancy Fairplace, has issued a challenge to the UK’s HR community. Fairplace is calling for HR managers to work with their talented employees to build personal Career Aspiration Plans.
The call follows a major CIPD report (Managing the Careers of Professional Knowledge Workers), which shows that the performance of organisations that employ Knowledge Workers is dependent on a style of management that helps employees progress their careers. Talented employees are best motivated and retained by clear career progression plans.
Michael Moran said: In the future, moving roles are going to be determined by a clear understanding of the competencies that an individual can transfer and develop. The classical CV, highlighting tasks accomplished and positions held, is no longer relevant.
This report identifies career progression planning as the most effective motivator for knowledge workers. Organisations that help their talented employees to develop their careers will build positive reputations within the job market, and in turn attract the best new talent coming through.
For this reason I am challenging the HR community to create Career Aspiration Plans for their most talented employees, helping these individuals to identify the competencies they need to acquire in order to progress in their careers.
The individuals who progress the most effectively are those who plan to acquire competencies not just for their next job role but, more importantly, the competencies they need for the roles they aspire to. Their Career Aspiration Plan should be used to evaluate the next job offer and judge whether this role eradicates their competency deficiencies. This is true for career planning both inside and outside the organisation.
Fairplace, which has provided career management consultancy to over 1600 professional knowledge workers during 2004, will be piloting Career Aspiration Plans for their own knowledge workers during 2005.
