June 2007 Job Creation Index (JCI) figures released - 28,037 positions created

Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals sector is this monthís top performer in UK job creation

Over 28,037 jobs were created across the UKís 21 key industries in June 2007. This figure is down by 43 per cent when compared to job creation in June 2006, but a number of sectors have seen a strong performance including the chemicals and pharmaceuticals sector, which recorded a positive JCI of 538.

The JCI figures are determined by comparing the number of jobs created within UK industrial sectors each month with the number of jobs created for the corresponding month in the previous year. The JCI figure shows individual industry performance, measured as a percentage above or below the number of jobs created from a year ago. From these figures, the following trends have been highlighted:

Juneís Front Runners
Chemicals and pharmaceutical ñ An excellent month for this sector with a positive JCI of 538. A vast improvement on last monthís JCI score of ñ98

Media, marketing and publishing ñ This sector has risen up the JCI this month largely as a result of plans to build a 300m media complex, including a film studio, in the North East. The JCI score has increased to 274

Food and drink ñ Plans by Veetee Rice to employ 200 new employees at its Strood factory has put the JCI figure up to 233

Juneís Chasers
Energy and utilities ñ After toping the JCI index last month, this sector has now fallen to the second lowest position on the JCI at ñ91

Textiles ñ The lowest sector on the JCI index, with the figure dropping to ñ93

Ren Schuster, CEO of Adecco Group UK & Ireland, said, ìJune 2007 has seen a dip in job creation compared to this time last year. Few areas have reported an increase in job creation whilst a number of the industries have had significant declines according to the figures provided by Mandis. However, there were some admirable improvements in the number of jobs for some sectors when compared to last year, particularly chemicals and pharmaceutical and media, marketing and publishing industries, which have really excelled this month.î

Philip Arnold, director of Mandis, commented, ìAlthough the JCI has decreased overall by 43 per cent compared to June 2006, some areas have shown large percentage increases compared to the previous year. However, it should be noted that except for leisure and recreation, the JCI figures were fairly low during the same month in 2006.î

Arnold continued, ìDespite this decline the positives are still worth mentioning, in particular chemicals and pharmaceuticals, which is up 538. This is due primarily to Quintiles investing 7.5m, with the help of a Scottish Regional Selective Assistance Grant of 1.25m, in a new factory at the Alba Campus in Livingston. Around 150 new jobs will be created by the expansion.î

The Mandis / Adecco Job Creation Index is the ongoing monthly tracker of UK jobs created across 21 industries in the UK that enables year on year monthly comparisons. This ëliveí data is gathered via research during each month into the employment intentions of a representative sample of over 2000 UK organisations, providing a key, up-to-date indicator on economic performance and confidence across the sectors. The monthly study is conducted by Mandis Business Intelligence and sponsored by Adecco, the UKís largest recruiter.
