July 2005 Job Creation Index (JCI) figures released

Consumer goods and finance and banking lead the way on the Job Creation Index

Over 36,000 jobs were created across the UKís 21 key industries in July with a few key sectors topping the Job Creation Index. The consumer goods manufacturers top this monthís index creating the highest percentage difference to the number of jobs that were created this time last year in the sector. This month the JCI is 1825.

The JCI figures are determined by comparing the number of jobs created within UK industrial sectors each month with the number of jobs created for the corresponding month in the previous year. The JCI figure shows individual industry performance, measured as a percentage above or below the number of jobs created from a year ago. From these figures, the following trends have been highlighted:

Julyís Front Runners

Consumer goods manufacturing ñ The consumer goods sector tops the Job Creation Index this month with a JCI of 1825

Finance and banking ñ The finance and banking sector has seen an increase in job creation this month with 5,345 jobs created, the highest number in 2005 for this sector

Vehicles and parts ñ Following on from last monthís success this sector continues to recruit with a positive JCI of 397

Julyís Chasers

Media and marketing ñ Following on from last monthís downturn, the media and marketing sector continues to see a decline in job creation with a JCI of -99

Public sector ñ July has been a slow month for recruitment in the public sector. This month it drops to ñ98 on the Job Creation Index

Richard MacMillan, managing director of Adecco UK and Ireland said: ìThe consumer goods industry appears to be recruiting more steadily compared to this time last year, as does the finance and banking sector which is always a good economic indicator. But as we enter the summer holiday period not only do we typically see job creation fall but also finding candidates becomes more difficult.ì

Ray Murphy of Mandis commented, Job creation in sectors directly dependent on consumer confidence such as retailing, leisure, food and drink and building have been more restrained in the past couple of months and in comparison with last year. New jobs are quite evident though in other important areas such as vehicles, transport, chemicals and land and property.

The Mandis/Adecco Job Creation Index is the ongoing monthly tracker of UK jobs created across 21 industries in the UK that enables year on year monthly comparisons. This ëliveí data is gathered via research during each month into the employment intentions of 500 leading UK organisations, providing a key, up-to-date indicator on economic performance and confidence across the sectors. The monthly study is conducted by Mandis Business Intelligence and sponsored by Adecco, the UKís largest recruiter.
