The UKís largest public sector e-recruitment service is predicting the end of specialist disability jobsites in the future.
Jobsgopublic is the UKís largest public sector e-recruitment service. It advertises in excess of 50,000 jobs each year and attracts some 500,000 visitors per month. It also runs the official channel for all UK local government jobs through its LGJobs.com portal.
Until recently the Jobsgopublic policy was to help employers reach people with disabilities through tie-ups with specialist disability web sites such as YourAble.com. The new Jobsgopublic policy is to advise clients to bypass specialist disability sites entirely.
Research now shows that specialist sites are not effective and only serve to perpetuate the segregation of people with disabilities within the UK jobs market.
Richard Tyrie, Director of Jobsgopublic explains,
Attempting to encourage people with disabilities to apply for public sector employment through specialist websites is patronising and unnecessary. It assumes that people with disabilities can be characterised solely through their interest in disability issues.
People with disabilities appear to agree. Our data shows people with disabilities are more inclined to use mainstream job boards or employersí own career sites than specialist sites.
Employers are better off investing additional time and resources to ensure that their own career websites and other third party job boards that they use are completely accessible.
We have put a huge resource into ensuring that Jobsgopublic powered sites are attractive and appropriate to all people with disabilities through the UK. Our new platform is now 100% compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act.
As a result, we believe that there is little future for specialist disability e-recruitment sites, such as Jobability.com or YoureAble.com. They will have very little part to play in ensuring that people with disabilities get comprehensive access to UK public sector employment opportunities.
Jobsgopublic is already seeing the results of this policy in its subscriber profile
A recent survey of all job seekers looking for employment through the Jobsgopublic portal revealed that three percent of all visitors are people who are registered disabled. That is equivalent to 15,000 job seekers every month.
And the indications are that this figure is much higher. The number of registered disabled is only ever a small proportion of the comprehensive total of people with a declared disability.
Jobsgopublic are now working with public sector employers to help them ensure that their employment practices are entirely consistent with a policy that actively encourages people with disabilities to apply for all jobs that are available through the public sector.
