Following the publication of a Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD) survey showing up to four per cent of UK workers are employed on zero-hours contracts, James Reed, chairman of the UK’s largest jobs site reed.co.uk, said:

“While zero-hour contracts aren’t for everyone they are better than the alternative, which is no work at all. With more than a million unemployed young people in the UK, we should be doing everything we can to give people opportunities to work. In the current economic climate, anything that acts as a barrier to employment cannot be a good thing.

“There is good news on the horizon, however, with our latest Reed Job Index showing 17% more job opportunities in July compared to the same time last year. The jobs market is one of the first indicators of the health of the economy and our figures show continued growth during 2013. We are now seeing wider signs that the UK is on the road to recovery – a positive sign for jobseekers and the UK economy in general.”
