Banff and Buchan College in the North-east of Scotland has launched a new learning centre to provide IT training to the area

Banff and Buchan College in the North-east of Scotland has launched a new learning centre to provide IT training to the area. The College is only one of eight training centres in Scotland to be selected to participate in an Industry Alliance for Jobs programme – it aims to provide the latest industry-recognised IT training to 100,000 Scots by 2010.

The new training centre, which has created three new appointments, will house the Collegeís accredited Industry Alliance for Jobs ëHUBí Academy which aims to offer the latest training resources from some of the worldís most widely-recognised IT providers. Partners include Microsoft, Cisco, Randstad, Oracle and learndirect scotland.

The centre, within a North-east Academy, has resulted in a major investment project with a refurbishment and new IT systems. It has been part-funded by a grant from the Scottish Government capital funds via the Scottish Funding Council.

Lynda Slessor, IT curriculum leader, Banff and Buchan College, said: ìWe are delighted with the facility which ensures we can now offer a welcoming and functional learning centre for the North-east of Scotland. The centre is being equipped to a very high standard with the latest IT equipment ensuring that we deliver the skills which businesses and individuals are really looking for.î

The new appointments include Helen Stewart, as a vocational trainer and assessor, who will be running the new IT courses as of March as well as an additional full time and part time position. The new learning centre will have a strong focus on IT training and plans are in place to make the facility available to school pupils across Aberdeenshire also.

Robert Sinclair, Principal of Banff and Buchan College, said: ìAlthough we have provided training courses in Ellon for a number of years, this new centre allows us to offer a greater range of courses to more people. Our aim is to monitor the local economy to ensure we make all courses and training relevant to the area at any given time. We hope that companies will utilise the opportunity for employee training and development and look forward to building further relationships with the local business community.î
