Individuals should shape their own learning

says CIPD report

The latest discussion report from training specialists, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development in association with the Cambridge Programme for Industry, shows that the individual should be in charge of his or her learning in order to become effective. The report Helping people learn, offers a range of effective and innovative learning options for consideration.

CIPD Learning Training and Development Adviser, Martyn Sloman, comments, ìEffective learning by individuals and teams is critical to the service delivery and business success in organisations today. As the report shows, organisations need to place emphasis on allowing the individual to shape his or her learning within the boundaries of the organisationís values and strategies. Training departments with top-down support must find a way of promoting this new self-steered learning.î

The document is available as a free down load from the CIPD web site at www.cipd.co.uk/helpingpeoplelearn. This site gives human resource professionals the opportunity to comment on the discussion document and submit examples of best practice in their organisations.

Sloman continues, ìWe are seeking ëislands of innovationí - emerging ideas and new approaches which promote learning and may cover a range of activities. We need to find answers to some key questions including: ëhow do we protect time for learningí, ëhow do we develop line managers as coachesí and ëhow do we measure learning as opposed to training activity?íî

When all the submissions have been analysed, Cambridge Programme for Industry will produce a full research report. Their findings will be unveiled at the HRD conference 2004, held in Olympia London on April 20-22.
