Less than 48 hours since UK Labour MEPs defied their leadership and voted for a 48-hour week, Huntress I.T. represented the recruitment industry today when they appeared in front of 3m viewers on France2, Franceís national TV station, to voice their opposition to the legislation. Huntress, one of the fastest growing professional staffing suppliers in the UK and a major player in the French IT recruitment market, were approached for comment as one of the industryís leading consultancies.
Stephen Stott, Huntress I.T.ís European Contracts Director, claimed that if the legislation goes ahead it would become more difficult to compete against emerging markets such as China and India in the Human Resource arena. Many large I.T. projects are already being outsourced to the Indian sub continent where more competitive I.T. manpower is available. This legislation would be a further blow to European business and competitiveness in a demanding global marketplace, at a time when there is already great anxiety within the industry about the impact of the proposed Agency Workersí Directive. Concerns have also been raised that the legislation restricts the freedom of choice of contractors and employees.
Mr Stott added, Many large I.T. projects demand extensive working hours at key stages of the implementations to ensure critical business systems have continuity, particularly in the manufacturing, distribution and finance areas of large multi national companies. Reducing this flexibility would clearly affect companies in their ability to compete on a Global stage.
