Buzzwords and flashy job titles are popular but itís leading to confusion amongst employers - as well as job hunters warn experts.

íCampaign Coordinatorí, íMarcoms Managerí, í360 Marketing Managerí, íCommunications Officerí, íMarketing Services Managerí and íBrand Managerí are just a handful of titles employed by marketing people.

Jonny Cainer, Managing Director at Marketing Professionals UK, says companies looking to strengthen their marketing activity are often baffled by the jargon:

At the last count we uncovered over 150 different job titles advertised. Itís a testament to the creativity of marketing people that they continually are able to re-invent their own job titles although the specification is often the same.

It makes it even harder for HR people and company directors to hire the right person when there is such a confusing array of job titles some of which can be perceived as rather gimmicky. Confusing and misleading job titles can sometimes mean a huge gulf between candidates in terms of competence and salary expectations even though they have the same job title.

We have seen many examples of íMarketing Managersí who manage nobody but themselves. We have also seen those who are actually Sales Managers and do no marketing at all. The title íMarketing Managerí might just happen to be standard for their company or industry. In equal numbers are íSales Managersí who are really Marketing Managers. A company may even call its sales manager the head of sales and marketing to impress customers, when in fact that company has no marketing plan. It is crucial that before filling a marketing position, people responsible for recruitment look closely at the facts behind a CV or get professional marketing recruitment advice, adds Cainer. Ends
