Home Learning College comments on the Governments Skills Pledge

.

Comment from David Snow, Academic Director, Home Learning College in response to the release of the Governmentís Skills Pledge on 14th June 2007

Skilling the Workforce from Home

An important part of the future economic success of Britain is to have a fully skilled adult workforce who can really add value to businesses and the community. The governmentís Skills Pledge, released on 14th June 2007, is a step in the right direction and a number of employers have already signed up to support their staff in developing their basic skills. However it is important to remember that individuals also have the power to enhance their career prospects, and there are now a range of home study courses available which help people develop their skills and climb the next rung on the career ladder.

The growth of home learning shows the significance placed on attaining knowledge and skills by the adult workforce, who have already realised the need to take education in their own hands. Home learning provides a very flexible and affordable route to gaining qualifications in a wide range of subjects such as book-keeping, computing, business and health care. Home learning doesn't necessarily mean studying on your own; at Home Learning College all learners get access to dedicated tutors, have their assignments marked with comprehensive feedback, in addition to a set of purpose designed self-study materials.

Adults are taking a greater interest in their own life-long learning needs, but it is still vital that employers and the state encourage personal skills development and allow the UK workforce to compete on a global scale. A fully skilled adult population is the key to our future economic success, and a major contributor to this will be the home learner working flexibly around work and family commitments.
