London's hospitals work in partnership to promote the capital and deliver a technology revolution in the NHS

London First today relaunched www.londonmedicine.org.uk, a portal for information on treatments available and for healthcare jobs in London. The site is aimed at potential patients and recruits worldwide and brings together, for the first time, a range of London's healthcare service providers across the public and private sectors. It also provides a new tool to help deliver the impending technology revolution in London's health service.

Professor Malcolm Green, Head of the National Heart and Lung Institute, said:

The website promotes London both globally and domestically as the world's leading medical centre of excellence for medicine, education and training.

During the launch, David Kwo, Chief Information Officer, London NHS, outlined the strategic vision for health IT in London, and the Government's plans for a seamless national 'spine' linking clusters of Trusts across the country (including the pan-London cluster) for electronic patient record keeping and electronic management systems. David Kwo emphasized the challenge and opportunity facing the NHS, and his aspirations for the successful delivery of the technology revolution in London's health service over the next few years.

The London Medicine website offers a searchable database of :

hospitals providing treatments in London.
treatments available in the UK capital.
lists of job vacancies in healthcare.
education and training opportunities.
accurate, up to date news and information about the sector
links to other relevant websites.

The website will provide help to a wide range of audiences. It will assist people seeking treatment or expert advice, healthcare professionals seeking work or training in London, prospective students, research organisations, health service managers, suppliers to the health sector, the media and all those with an interest in London's health sector. Site membership by institutions will allow profile and case study pages and other information to be made available.

Valerie Owen, Managing Director of London Medicine, said:

London is one of the world's foremost centres of medical expertise, with a huge range of specialist units and training institutions. But the sheer complexity of provision runs the risk of confusing patients and professionals alike. With over NHS hospitals, over 45 private hospitals and over 17,000 acute beds, there is a real need for a single portal to the sector and for overseas promotion.

Potential patients from around the world can now search for particular treatments in the UK capital; employees can see what new courses or job opportunities are available; and managers and professionals can locate consistent and accurate information. This is a real step forward to position London as a world class centre for healthcare and medical excellence and to tackle the desperate shortage of healthcare staff to cover needs over the next five years in the capital.

The work of redeveloping the website was made possible through support from HP, one of the largest suppliers of IT to the health sector; and IDX UK, suppliers of software systems to improve quality of patient service.
