Has The CV Become The Victim Of Its Own Success?

Did you notice the other day, a company claims to have nearly 10 million CV’s on its database this is a very impressive statistic and it got me thinking about the how the CV has evolved and if it can sustain its place as the selection tool of choice for many recruiters?

Last century most applicants would tailor their CV for a specific vacancy and in all probability because of the effort involved would not have sent out many applications. The recruiter would have spent a limited amount of time but would have been satisfied with what they uncovered.

Today candidates are pleased to have a “Vanilla CV” used for all applications, easily and happily sent with just a click on a job board. Recruiters are equally cheered to have a consistent format that is OCR readable and parsable.

Everything seems fine, karma is maintained, the Universe is in balance, but if that 10 million figure is true it does represent virtually 30% of the UK workforce! How much credibility can a recruiter place on it? Does it reflect what an individual can achieve or their ability to change?
