Itís well known that todayís graduates are facing a tough market – employment figures are low at 7.6 per cent, and the US has even seen the first example of a graduate suing her college after accusing staff of not working hard enough to help her find a job.
Finding your first graduate job is always going to be a challenge, no matter what the economic climate, and unfortunately todayís situation makes the process yet harder. However, do the right planning and you will see success.
For graduates looking for that first elusive job, please see the below tips from Monster.co.uk:
- Think: What do you actually want to do? What is your passion? An enthusiastic, heartfelt application stands head and shoulders above a half-hearted attempt to get any job that happens to be free
- What route can you take to get to your dream job? If youíll need experience to be considered, make sure you go out and get it. Think laterally, if you canít get experience that directly relates to your dream job take on another position that will equip you with transferrable skills
- Presentation: While turning up for lectures looking scruffy is acceptable, arriving at an interview in un-ironed clothes or with scuffed shoes can mean the end of the interview process before it has even begun
- Research: In the same way that you would revise for an exam, make sure that you have a thorough knowledge of the company youíre applying to when you arrive for your interview. Demonstrate that knowledge by asking relevant, pertinent questions
