Glass ceiling comes down but walls go up for women in IT

The Training Camp research reveals women find entering the industry harder than progression

Women attempting to enter the IT industry are being put off at the first hurdle according to research by The Training Camp.

The European pioneer of Accelerated Learning questioned 100 women across a range of levels within the IT industry.

Of those questioned, 67 per cent felt it is more difficult getting into the industry as a woman than it is progressing up through the ranks. Once there, 52 per said they felt they could move up the career ladder quickly compared to other industry sectors.

Claire Taylor is a systems administrator at APT Solutions, which specialises in membership software and services for the not-for profit sector, and she completed an MCSE course recently at The Training Camp. ìOpening the door to IT is by far the biggest obstacle in my experience,î she explained. ìBeing able to demonstrate your credibility and suitability in such a male-dominated sector is a tough challenge and requires courage. However, if you persevere the career prospects are enormous.î

ìDespite multiple initiatives being put in place, the IT industry is failing to attract women into the sector and yet it offers enormous opportunity to those that make it when compared to other professions,î said Rob Chapman, CEO, The Training Camp. ìAs an industry, itís vital we donít patronise women but we need to think what can be done to make it easier for them to break in to the sector.î
