Fresh chapter opens for Breakthrough UK with move to new headquarters

Disabled people's organisation Breakthrough UK has relocated its head office as it looks to enable even more disabled adults nationwide. The new office in Crumpsall, Greater Manchester, was officially opened by Sir Richard Leese, Leader of Manchester City Council.

BREAKTHROUGH UK'S new headquarters have been officially opened by the Leader of Manchester City Council, Sir Richard Leese.

The not-for-profit organisation specialises in tackling discrimination and removing barriers to disabled people's representation in society by promoting employment or further training.

The move to a new head office in Crumpsall, in North Manchester, is intended to ensure that Breakthrough UK can enable even more disabled adults to lead independent lives in the future.

Since Breakthrough UK was founded 16 years ago in Ardwick, in East Manchester, it has worked with more than 6,000 disabled adults across the North West to find full-time employment, work experience or training opportunities.

The organisation also lobbies in Westminster to ensure that the interests of disabled people are consistently represented nationally.

Chief Executive Michele Scattergood said: "For the past 16 years, Breakthrough UK has been at the forefront of ensuring that disabled adults can lead fulfilled and independent lives.

"The new head office in Crumpsall suits our needs perfectly and will ensure that we can continue to champion the best interests of disabled adults regionally and nationally.

"Disabled people - more than any other group - are facing increasing barriers to their independence at this point in time and Breakthrough UK's work is evolving to meet their requirements.

"Members of our team will increasingly be working with disabled clients in their communities across Greater Manchester - and elsewhere in the North West - and our new head office will be the hub from which this work is co-ordinated."

Ms Scattergood added that Breakthrough UK is currently building up a database of fully accessible venues which her team will use for appointments.

She also paid tribute to the "support and assistance" which Manchester City Council has provided to help Breakthrough UK find the new premises.

Breakthrough UK's new head office in the Abraham Moss Centre, in Crescent Road,  was officially opened by Manchester City Council's Leader, Sir Richard Leese - who also represents the Crumpsall ward - on Tuesday, October 29.

Sir Richard Leese, Leader of Manchester City Council, said: "Disabled people face barriers to employment and independence on a daily basis.

"The work of Breakthrough UK's team is proving an invaluable way of overcoming this and their work is making a real difference where it matters the most.

"I'm proud that they are based in Manchester and honoured to be asked to open their new headquarters."

Breakthrough UK's head office has been named "the Kevin Hyett Suite" in memory of one of the organisation's co-founders.
