Yuval Ben-Itzhak, Finjanís CTO, made the comments as details of the 2008 Information Security Breaches Survey, carried out by a consortium led by PriceWaterhouseCoopers LLP, were announced on day one of the Infosecurity Europe show in London.

Ben-Itzhak said that the survey, which was carried out on behalf of the Department for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform, confirms his long-held belief that companies need to do more to protect their confidential data.

This message is particularly true for the UK this year, now that the provisions of the Companies Act 2006 are due to come into force. As a result, issues such as corporate governance and best security practice guidelines are certain to become a hot topic in the months ahead, he said.

From the survey, Ben-Itzhak said he found the conclusion that unauthorized access by outsiders is at four times the level seen in 2000 and that the average seriousness of incidents has increased confirm the need for heightened vigilance on the IT security front.

I especially found the conclusions of the report - specifically that 77 per cent of UK companies say that protecting their customer data is a very important driver of their IT security expenditure - to be highly relevant to our own market experience, he said.

Solutions to the problems of IT security are that companies should understand the security threats they are facing and take a pro-active approach to their security needs, so that they can prevent malicious code from stealing data using real-time content inspection technologies, he added.
