Employment Relations Minister speaks at CIPD conference

CIPD Employment Law Conference, 7 July 2011, London

Legislation and its impact continue to dominate the business agenda and many organisations are struggling to keep up with complex developments. Knowing and understanding the changes to employment law and how it will affect the organisation is vital if organisations are to grow and prosper. This year’s Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development’s (CIPD) Employment Law Conference will give expert advice to help organisations get to grips with recent changes.

The Government’s Employment Relations Minister, Ed Davey MP, will open the conference and present insights into changes in employment law, flexible working and employment tribunals. He will go on to discuss the Government’s plans to simplify regulation, working with business to cut unnecessary red tape.

Conference sessions will offer ‘ask the expert’ surgeries, which will focus on recent legal changes, like the Bribery Act and the removal of the Default Retirement Age (DRA). There will also be workshops providing a complete update on case law, including: discrimination, employee status, harassment at work and duty of care, TUPE, industrial dispute resolution, employment tribunals and Acas conciliation, Agency Workers Directive and dismissal and redundancy laws.

Mike Emmott, Employee Relations Adviser, CIPD, and chair of the ‘ask the expert’ surgery on the Bribery Act, says: “This year has seen a number of significant changes to employment law and continues to be a period of great economic change. Organisations large or small can’t afford to waste unnecessary time and money on trying to decipher these complex developments.

“We know from our members and work with business leaders that clear, concise information and an opportunity to ask questions and learn about the best ways to implement changes is beneficial. This conference offers an opportunity to gain insights from experts, network, ask questions and feel confident that your organisation doesn’t risk breaching any recent changes in the law.

“This practical, interactive one-day conference is for employment law advisers, employee relations specialists, HR professionals, business leaders and senior line managers, that hope to get a step ahead and make employment law work for them and their employees in their organisation.”

Expert advice will be given by a mix of speakers, including: Professor Ian Smith, University of East Anglia, Professor Dominic Regan, City University London, Nick Burkill, Head of Trial, Dorsey & Whitney London and Founder, The Anti-Fraud Network, Steve Williams, Equality Director, Acas and Simon Scales, Director, Global Investigations, TNT Express.
