A survey out today, commissioned by web collaboration experts WebEx , has revealed that over two thirds (64%) of office workers are not permitted to work from home. It also found that the average office worker spends the equivalent of 32 working days a year on the office commute.
ìIf British businesses were to allow their staff one day of flexible working a week, the nation could potentially gain around 38.8 million working days per year,î said Bert van de Zwan, vice president WebEx EMEA.
The survey also found that:
One in three of would be prepared to contribute towards flexible working technologies from their own pockets
One in four (23%) would sacrifice their annual pay rise for the chance to work from home for one day a week
One in ten would voluntarily use the time saved on commuting to do more work
ìThe national, daily commute to work is a major cause of environmental pollution and a major headache for the national workforce. Offering staff the chance to work from home one day a week would help reduce carbon emissions and give staff a day off from commuter hell,î said Bert van der Zwan, WebEx.
ìUK employees are crying out for more flexibility on how and where they work and yet employers are clinging onto a Victorian desk-bound working ethic. Businesses need to understand that by embracing a flexible working culture enabled by modern web collaboration technology they can not only make fantastic cost savings, but also increase staff productivity and morale,î Bert van der Zwan added.
Increasingly, businesses are investing in remote access technologies, such as a WebEx WebOffice, to enable employees to work as effectively from home as in the office. Specifically designed to make working from home easier and more cost effective, a WebOffice provides businesses with a ëvirtual officeí, located on the internet. With WebOffice remote workers can collaborate over the web - such as share documents, calendars and databases, assign and track tasks, post group announcements, and hold online meetings.
