One frustrating aspect of the internet relates to form filling and the fact that many organisations, although they place PDF forms on their web site, require users to print out the forms locally, fill them in by hand manually
- literally using a pen or pencil - and then post them or fax them back to the organisation concerned. This approach misses a golden opportunity to make the process of submitting forms easy and efficient for users as well as to reduce the probability of errors and improve the work flow processes of the form provider.
To address this issue, UK software house, Evenlogic has recently set up a special eForms software development group that specialises in providing practical true electronic forms solutions. The solutions incorporate web-server-based software and in most cases operate in conjunction with a SQL Server or Oracle database. Solutions can be based on both HTML forms and PDF forms but there is a slight bias towards PDF solutions. A key aspect of the PDF eForms solutions is a mechanism devised by Evenlogic that allows users with Adobe Reader on their PCs to save to the server the data that they have entered on their form. The user can then return to the form at a later time and continue working on it from the point where they left off.
A recent adopter of an Evenlogic eForms web solution is ILEX Tutorial College, who are the UK’s biggest provider of legal education through distance learning. They are using for their 2005 campaign a PDF electronic forms solution, in conjunction with an eCommerce system developed by Evenlogic, to enable students to purchase course manuals and CD-ROMs on-line. Another recent user is Camp America, who have integrated Evenlogic’s electronic forms technology into a web-based system for their 2005 campaign to recruit young people from the UK to work at USA Summer Camps.
