While swimwear, sun cream and flip-flops are all beach essentials, HR experts are advising people to leave their blackberries and mobiles behind when jetting off into the sun.
A recent survey found 40 per cent of full time workers are unable to completely detach from the office when away on holiday.
Said Manchester based HR expert, Stephen Seymour, from The Urquhart Partnership:
The UK has the longest working hours in Europe and this culture means people feel unable to switch off when away from the office.
It's extremely important we acknowledge we need a break and that our families and home life have an equal share or our time.
While modern technology means communication is possible in even the most remote places across the globe, the notion of being 'on call' can jeopardize holidays and hinder us from truly relaxing and rejuvenating.
People may feel they are showing commitment and earning brownie points with the boss by dealing with work issues on holiday, but this approach can actually hinder performance.
Added Stephen Seymour: It's vital people value their mental and physical wellbeing and take time away from the office to properly relax.
Rather than fretting over emails and deadlines, workers should take a well earned break and then return to the office replenished and ready for business.
Long working hours and being on call for long periods of time can take its toll both emotionally as well as physically. The UK has the highest divorce rate in Europe and the strain of office life can often throw relationships off course.
Relationships can break down due to a partner's resentment of time spent at work or dealing with business when away from the office. It's essential people consider a healthy balance to avoid work taking over and affecting personal life and relationships, added Seymour.
