Desperate jobseekers are dumbing down their CVs to secure jobs they’re overqualified for, according to a global recruitment agency.

NES Group has received a number of CVs from applicants pretending to be less educated or experienced than they really are.

However, latest statistics reveal the job market is improving meaning recruits who take a step down, could find it difficult to move on to a more suitable role.  A study of jobs with 100 top employers found they had increased recruitment targets for 2010 by 12%.

Matthew Halle, recruitment expert at global recruitment business NES Group, said underplaying your skills could backfire:

“One impact of the recession is that people are playing down experience and achievements so they’re considered for roles they’re overqualified for.  In a difficult climate this understandable, but for recruitment consultants or hiring managers receiving your CV, it can smack of desperation.  Unless you plan to embellish the truth next time you update your CV, you’ll have some explaining to do about why you took a step backwards instead of finding a role more suited to your expertise.

“Don’t apply to anything and everything that comes up.  Take time in your job search, identify suitable roles and invest all energy into applying for these.  Let a specialist recruiter share your work and find you suitable vacancies.”
