Creating opportunities and a standard of practice for the interns of today

Fast growth tech start-up Uniplaces named as one of Europe’s best employers

Uniplaces, the fastest-growing student accommodation platform in the world, has been named as one of Europe’s best employers.

InternsGoPro, an organisation that is fighting for better internships for the young people of Europe, awarded Uniplaces the “European Label for Quality Internships Champion”.

This is a crowdsourced label that showcases the best employers for youth in all industries and for the whole of Europe. The label has only been awarded to three companies so far: London-based Uniplaces, Belgian company Acumen Public Affairs, and the European Youth Forum. The new standard is supported by 20 NGO partners and endorsed by two European Commissioners.

Commenting on the award, Miguel Amaro, co-founder of Uniplaces, said: “We are extremely proud of this recognition. We want interns to get better working conditions and routes into full-time employment. Students and recent graduates need more chances, and the word ‘internship’ needs to stop being synonymous with cheap, exploitative labour.”

As well as paying graduates at least 125% above the Intern Subsistence Index, Uniplaces offers a whole host of benefits as part of its intern programme, which can last up to six months. All Uniplaces interns are given formal training and responsibility as well as support with educational structure. To prepare people for life after the internship, all the Uniplaces interns are also supported with tailored career development and employment plans.

According to research by The Youth Forum, many internships do not contain an educational experience. While the same study also found that almost half of Europe’s young people have done an internship, only one third of these are paid and, of those that are paid, 58% do not cover basic living costs and 35% of interns are not offered a contract.

InternsGoPro is a social enterprise with the aim to become the reference for quality internships and entry-level jobs in Europe and give visibility to best employers through the European Label for Quality Internships. It has the mission to boost youth employment and promote internships that truly help students & graduates develop skills and get a job.

Amaro continued, “We are growing and are looking for great ‘young blood’ to grow with us. So our message is clear. If there’s a graduate out there who’s talented, ambitious and has a thirst for life - we want to hear from you.”
