Climate change is an issue for smaller businesses

With the Queenís speech and recent Stern report calling for urgent action from the Government and businesses on climate change, environmental sustainability has rocketed up the corporate agenda, however Bibby Financial Services is warning small business owners and managers who think it doesnít affect them to think again.

While reducing carbon emissions is undoubtedly a concern that has been tackled by large corporates, many smaller businesses have yet to take action. However, a recent consumer poll* suggests that the public have woken up to the benefits of going green and they are increasingly putting pressure on businesses of all shapes and sizes to prove their green credentials, not just the household names.

And, it is not just the public that are demanding UK businesses prove they are doing their bit to help the environment, to win public sector contracts companies need to show they follow sustainable business practices, such as maximising energy efficiency and using renewable energy, recycling, and reducing carbon emissions.

David Robertson, chief executive at Bibby Financial Services, said: ìIt is easy to lay responsibility for change with larger companies and claim that they are the ones with the money to spend on new initiatives but the reality is we all have our part to play, even smaller businesses can make a difference.î

ìIt doesnít have to be on a large scale or prove expensive, simple things like recycling waste, as you would at home, can make a real difference. Turning off lights, and switching off computers at the end of the day will not only save energy it will also save the business money. Another effective way of reducing carbon emissions is to consider letting employees work from home from time to time, to reduce the number of staff driving to and from work.î
