CIPD invites organisations to share excellence in people management

.

CIPD Director General, Geoff Armstrong today calls on people centered UK and Irish organisations from the private, public and voluntary sectors, to enter The People Management Award 2003.

Armstrong says, As last year's field of applicants shows, organisations all over the UK and Ireland are practising excellent people management. They are taking a creative and progressive approach to ensuring that they design a working environment in which people want to make a willing and enthusiastic contribution.

We are calling on those workplaces that put their employees at the heart of what they do, to enter for the award. We want to hear about how people management is helping to deliver competitive success.

Past award winners demonstrate that there is no single blueprint for success: winning entries have included diversity initiatives, partnership agreements between industry and unions and re-organisations.

Other examples of good practice include:

* Reorganisation which is aimed at disbanding hierarchical structures and replacing them with flatter structures in order to improve employee participation and trust between line managers and workers

* Improved awareness among all levels of staff (particularly the Board) as to the link between good people management and organisational success

* Successful implementation of excellent or innovative people management practices, particularly those which integrate human resource initiatives with line management.

* Recognition of the need for step change throughout organisations encompassing simultaneous improvement in the use of technology, corporate structures, financial arrangements, and the management of people.

Last year's award winner, the Defence Aviation Repair Agency (DARA) saw its New Ways of Working programme, featured on BBC 2's Newsnight and in the Financial Times, as a direct result of winning the award.

DARA's HR Director, Bernard Galton said: Winning this prestigious award was a tremendous accolade for DARA and recognises the contribution of all those involved in our New Ways of Working change programme.

It was also our opportunity to show other organisations 'the art of the possible' - what can be achieved despite the obstacles. We approached this major organisation design programme in a structured cohesive way, and were able to achieve measurable success.

DARA's training and development programme focused on managerial capability to support the change. This comprised psychometric profiling, problem-solving and many other disciplines. In-house managers, with support and in partnership with DARA's various Trades Unions, implemented the training programme, which was facilitated by the Bourton Group. The programme enabled the organisation to exceed delivery targets with 35% fewer employees, helped save 2million on the pay bill and reduce turn round times by up to 30%.
