JM Digital (www.jmdigital.com), the digital recruitment business of The JM Group, has revealed in its latest report that IT workers with Video-on-Demand (VOD) experience are now reaping the rewards of a booming market.
Whilst IT workers in other industry sectors are feeling the pinch of the economy, the VOD sector is proving to be a thriving industry. Within a relatively short timescale this sector has grown out of almost nowhere. The online TV and movie market was worth £11m five years ago according to Screen Digest and next year it is expected to increase to a phenomenal £379m[1].
Dave Pye, CEO of the JM Group, commented: “We’ve seen the demand for IT workers with VOD experience explode over the last year. This is a booming sector and demand is being driven by new market entrants and the expansion of existing organisations within this sector. These companies need IT workers to support their growth as they race to pick up as many subscribers to their service as possible.”
In the last 12 months alone, Netflix and YouView entered the UK market to compete against the likes of BlinkBox (a Tesco Company), LoveFilm (an Amazon company) and BSkyB. Demand is being fuelled further by the emergence of an increasing number of VOD consultancies that need IT workers to sustain their rapid growth.
David Young, Head of JM Digital, commented: “With a lack of IT workers available to fulfil supply we’re finding that individuals with VOD experience can now charge a premium for their services. Employers are paying as much as £500 a day or £80k per annum for these roles.”
The rising demand for VOD skills is also supported by statistics on IT Jobs Watch[2]. It showed that the salaries and contract rates advertised for IT workers with VOD experience across UK recruitment websites increased by 12.94% and 4.16% respectively over the last 12 months.
Pye commented: “We don’t expect to see any let up in the demand for VOD skills any
time soon. This sector looks set to grow over the next few years so if you’re an IT worker this is a great area to be in at the moment.”
