The outlook for UK PLC is the bleakest itís been for a while, with Alistair Darling admitting in the 2009 budget that the world economy is expected to contract this year for the first time since WW2. But new research will warm your cockles; offices UK wide have seen a surge in team camaraderie which is keeping spirits high despite the gloom.
Office Angels, the UK's leading secretarial and recruitment consultancy reveals that almost two thirds of the nation (61%) have noticed theyíve increased their efforts in the workplace during the past year. But encouragingly, despite increased pressure, a quarter (23%) admit they are more supportive of colleagues, helping them when they can. Furthermore half of UK office workers (50%) have identified an actual increase in support from their colleagues since the onset of recession proving that team spirit is stronger than ever.
The research, of 1,003 UK office workers also proves that the WW2 adage ëKeep Calm and Carry Oní still very much rings true, with two thirds (65%) of the UK PLC describing the mood in their office as ëbusiness as usualí.
And it seems like there are many reasons for the UK PLC to keep their wartime spirits high:
Creative flow: One third (35%) of office workers feel both workplace efficiency and creativity have increased over the past year as people are using their time more effectively and ëgoing that extra mileí to prove themselves
ï No ëIí in team: One in seven (14%) have also noticed less of the ëbeing in it for themselvesí attitudes amongst colleagues with everyone helping each other more
ï Grass isnít greener: Nearly half (45%) the UK PLC donít plan to change jobs in the next six months and one third (34%) of workers are valuing the stability their workplace gives them more than ever
However itís not all good news, as findings show office workers nationwide are feeling the strain. For the majority, 58%, job security appears to be a cause for concern, no doubt the reason for the surge in creativity and loyalty weíre experiencing.
David Clubb, Managing Director of Office Angels comments:
Itís so encouraging to see that despite the UK economy experiencing tough times, UK office workers are keeping their spirits up. Teamwork is absolutely crucial for a successful working environment, now more than ever - after all weíre all in this situation together. As these findings show, the UK PLC is smart and increasing efficiency and creativity will most certainly help your employer, and yourself. Just ensure itís in moderation – you donít want to experience burn-out and we donít want to see you working all hours in fear.î
