Twenty blind or partially sighted students spent two days at the SHL Management Centre last week meeting with potential employers, practicing psychometric tests, and discussing advice on applying for jobs and the support available from Government and employers.
Recruitment specialists from P&G, The Civil Service, BDO Stoy Hayward, LDA, Tate Office, the Royal Bank of Scotland Group, UBS, Deloitte, Accenture, TMP, Royal Mail, Barclays, Lloyds TSB, Centrica, Citigroup, KPMG, HSBC, Unilever and CMS Cameron McKenna also attended the event to learn more about the requirements of visually impaired candidates as well as to get an early opportunity to interview some high calibre individuals.
The candidates also spent an afternoon waterskiing - a fantastic confidence-building activity that all enjoyed. Comments from the attendees included:
I was sceptical at first about going but I thoroughly enjoyed it and learnt a great deal. In particular, I learnt not to give up hope. I found it eye opening to see other people’s determination and the effort they are putting in to find work. I was feeling a bit sorry for myself; meeting some new friends and sharing experiences was really helpful. - Anthony Carlton
I will definitely use the information gained from the mock interview to improve my interview technique. I now have some more ideas of where to look for work and how to go about it. - Tim Reynolds

- Candidates are available to discuss their experience with journalists.
