Amazon Recruiting In Line With Staff Expansion Plans

The UK chief executive of online retailer
Amazon has announced a recruitment plan to take on some 200 new corporate staff next year. 



Christopher North said that the recruitment - which would see the staff added at its UK headquarters in Slough -
would be a backbone of their preparations for the future. He explained it was
aimed at boosting its buying, merchandising and supply chain
capabilities. 



Mr North said, “We’re growing all the key functions at head office. We’re in
growth mode and are investing in our future.”



The company will also establish two new distribution centres in the UK, which
will create around 1,800 warehouse and distribution jobs. The centres will be
based in Rugeley in Staffordshire and at Dunfermline in Scotland and will help
the company develop the necessary infrastructure for commercial growth. 



Mr North said that the growth reflected the overall global strategy of the
company, which has benefited from the success of its Kindle electronic reader
device. He explained that a recent quarterly dip in the company’s profits was
due to the necessary outlay for the expansion. 



In the quarter to June 30, group profit fell eight per cent to £161 million on
sales up 51 per cent to £6.05 billion – the highest rate of growth in more than
a decade, said North.
