Ajax is the new technology skill that is taking US employers by storm. Ajax stands for Asynchronous Javascript And XML. Coined by Jesse James Garrett from Adaptive Path in February of this year this shorthand describes the highly popular implementation of Google Maps and Yahooís Flickr in one word. What used to be XHTML, CSS, DOM, XML, XSLT, XMLHTTPRequest and Javascript to describe the highly interactive features of these applications has now been simplified to single term: Ajax. The high popularity of those applications with web users is now catching on with corporations across the US who want to provide the same level of interactivity in their applications to their customers.
Instead of going from page to page this new programming paradigm holds the promise to make the Internet and its applications really interactive giving the user the look and feel of a standard software application. This new advancement will come at a price. The implementation of Ajax typically means to reengineer or completely re-write existing web applications which will trigger significant demand for programmers and software engineers.
SkillPROOF Inc. has been tracking the skill requirements of large employers in the US for two years and has recently installed a web page where interested recruiters can watch the growth of demand for Ajax skills and its spread. Demand is currently growing at a high double-digit rate per month. The job market for Ajax skills is still in its infancy with the real push to be expected in 2006.
