91% of Londoners still in search of the perfect career

Nearly a third of workers say they just fell into their jobs

Only 9% of London employees work in the career theyíve always dreamt of. A new survey carried out by Pitman Training High Holborn has revealed that 27% of workers in London, in careers ranging from teacher to restaurant manager, fell into their jobs by mistake.

- 18% of those questioned say theyíre only staying in their jobs because they see there is an opportunity to progress to a better position
- 28% admit to sticking it out as their industry offers good career prospects.

Of the sample who took part in the survey,
- 50% revealed they are looking for a job which is a step closer to the perfect one
- 18% are looking for better pay and conditions
- 9% are hoping to embark on a career.

Shilpa Wymer, principal of Pitman Training Holborn, said: ìItís quite a sad state of affairs that people are going to work everyday because they have to, rather than because they really want to. When weíre young we all have a picture of our perfect jobs in our head, but it seems that for the vast majority, things donít work out according to plan.î

She added: ìWeíre noticing more and more people coming into our centre to sign up for training courses, who are already have perfectly good, often well paid jobs, but theyíre not happy. But unlike decades ago when people stuck at their job regardless of career satisfaction, this generation realises that they can change their lives, and thatís really positive.î
