’Get more from maritime’ local recruitment agencies urged

.

Recruitment agencies will be encouraged to tap into the opportunities offered by the important maritime and logistics sector at a special event being organised in Ipswich by the Haven Gateway Partnership (HGP).

A recent study identified transport as Suffolk’s biggest industry, and more than 15,000 people are employed in the Haven Gateway’s maritime and logistics industries.

The Haven Gateway Partnership’s Maritime and Logistics Skills Centre (MaLSC) will be getting recruitment agencies representatives together for breakfast and a briefing on 27 January, during which agencies will be encouraged to:

-Use the Haven Gateway Partnership website to advertise jobs;
-Learn more about the maritime and logistics sector, which employs an estimated 15,000 people in the Haven Gateway area;
-Work together with Jobcentre Plus to pass on the message about the vast range of exciting jobs and careers available within the sector; and
-Discuss the general problems of recruitment and skills shortages in the
maritime and logistics sector, and how this can be tackled.

The event is being held at Associated British Ports’ Waterfront Conference Centre in the Old Customs House at the Port of Ipswich, and organised jointly with Jobcentre Plus.

There are about 60 recruitment agencies in the Haven Gateway area and we are keen to get them more involved in the sector, said Richard Morton, MaLSC project manager. We want them to use our website to advertise jobs, work with Jobcentre Plus to encourage people to look at jobs in the sector, and understand the funding that can be available for transfer into the industry.

The event will begin at 8.15, with breakfast followed by an introduction by Alfred Reeves, finance director of Fred. Olsen, and chairman of the HGP’s education and training group.

The guests will also hear from Richard Morton, from a representative of the Department of Trade and Industry’s Employment Agency Standards Inspectorate, and from Tina Ellis of Jobcentre Plus. The event will finish at 10.30am after a question and answer session.

This will be an opportunity for the recruitment agencies to find out what is going on in the maritime industry, what opportunities exist for them in placing people and how they can work with the Haven Gateway Partnership, said Richard Morton.

Recruitment agencies interested in attending the event should contact Richard Morton, 01394 458551, e-mail richard.morton@itstraining.co.uk or Jane Cragie, 01394 458552, e-mail jane.cragie@itstraining.co.uk

The Haven ports of Felixstowe, Harwich, Ipswich and Mistley represent one of the UK’s largest and most important gateways.

Based on their central role as hubs and generators of economic activity, the Haven Gateway Partnership provides a framework within which its partner organisations, from the private and public sectors, can work together to promote economic opportunities and secure the future prosperity of the region.
