The World’s First Student Careers App Is Released In The UK

A new app released this week on both iOS and Android will allow students and graduates to directly connect with leading employers like Google, Microsoft and L’Oréal from the palm of their hands, completely free of charge

A new app released this week on both iOS and Android will allow students and graduates to directly connect with leading employers like Google, Microsoft and L’Oréal from the palm of their hands, completely free of charge.

A pioneering recruitment app designed to help students and graduates land their dream careers has officially launched as of the 26th October.

Debut hopes to provide a breath of fresh air for students looking to enter their chosen industries. The app has some innovative features, which will make searching for jobs more exciting for graduates who are typically used to spending hours updating their CVs for endless lists of uninspiring job vacancies.

The most innovative feature of the Debut app is the Talent Spotter, which received the strongest feedback from students in pre-launch testing. Ordinarily candidates approach employers first, scattering lots of different job applications without being able to gauge a sense of how successful they will be and which ones to prioritise. With Debut, communication is reversed, the Talent Spotter sees employers carefully target and approach candidates directly. From the convenience of the students' mobile phones, they receive exclusive opportunities such as invitations to events, private discussions on campus, invites to apply, webinars and even fast tracking to the interview stage of selection, all before they have even applied for a position.

Students will be able to prioritise applications based on a unique ‘matching’ feature that recommends opportunities based on anonymous survey of thousands of employed graduates and interns.

Debut is also pioneering mobile gamification applied to recruitment. Launching with four mobile games within the app sponsored by L'Oreal, Microsoft, Deutsche Bank and EY, Debut presents the students with a new way to learn about careers in a more engaging way. Students who do well will be able to win prizes such as internships.

The app is launching with 40 of the leading graduate employers including Google, Deutsche Bank, Teach First, HMRC, PwC, Jaguar Land Rover, EY, Barclays and L’Oreal. Combined, these employers will hire more than 10,000 graduates over the next 12 months, with the help of Debut.

Akwasi Appiah, Queen Mary University London, was invited by Debut to take part in the pre-launch testing phase and commented:

“Being part of the pre-launch testing was an interesting experience, particularly as there is nothing else like this currently available for us. I love that you are able to streamline searches and that employers can come to you too, making everything so much easier and less time consuming.”

He continued:

“It’s great to finally have something like this available! The app also gives really valuable advice as to what employers are looking for and what steps I should take to get there. It was obviously designed with students in mind and it’s really slick and sophisticated, exactly what you want from an app like this. I am looking forward to getting stuck in and engaging with some top brands."

Charles Taylor, CEO and Founder of Debut, commented: “It is surprising that until now the most mobile audience, students, have been unable to engage with potential employers through their phones. We have designed Debut to provide a much-improved experience and offer real insight and opportunities to help students chose and start their careers. We want Debut to increase accessibility to early careers no matter what the students' location or background, something that is only possible through a native mobile app”
