Over half (53%) of Brits hit by work stress

Work is the most common cause for stress among UK adults, according to new research[i] - but over half (51%) of UK workers say they would feel uncomfortable taking a day off due to stress.

The survey carried out by online bedroom furniture specialist Time4Sleep.co.uk, found that work was the leading cause for stress, with 53% of people saying it is the area that most affects their stress levels.

The top five causes of stress in the workplace were identified as follows:

1)    Dealing with difficult clients/customers (51%)
2)    A demanding boss (35.8%)
3)    Colleague relationships (33.8%)
4)    Long working hours (32.5%)
5)    Time management issues (29.7%)

Despite over half (59%) of Brits considering stress an illness, the results revealed that the majority of people would feel uncomfortable citing stress as a reason for missing work.

Over one in five (22%) say they do not usually turn to anyone when they are feeling stressed and 77% of those questioned said that stress is not talked about enough.

Commenting on the findings, Jonathan Warren, Director of Time4Sleep.co.uk said, "With New Year is upon many people are reassessing different aspects of their lives - including their careers. Feeling overly stressed in the workplace may be a sign of our unhappiness with our jobs, and it is vital that we make the most of our sleep and relaxation outside of work”
