Union Learning Reps - Acas Publishes new Code

.

Acas, the employment relations service, today published its Code of Practice setting out new guidance for union learning reps. The Employment Act 2002 puts union learning reps on a statutory footing and the Code will enable employers and unions to put the provisions into practice.

Acas Chair Rita Donaghy said:

The recognition of union learning reps is an important step forward in giving people access to learning and skills through their workplaces. Acas welcomed the opportunity to work with the Department for Education and Skills in drawing up the Code. We hope the guidance helps employers and unions to comply fully with the new Act and benefit their organisations.

The Code - Time Off for Trade Union Duties and Activities - covers issues such as time off for learning activities and training to carry out the activities. Examples are given throughout to illustrate the guidelines. The provision of Acas Codes are admissable as evidence and may be taken into account at employment tribunals.
