Trust gets in the way of flexi-working

Scepticism dominates a survey of over 300 companies on the benefits of flexi working

Scepticism dominates a survey of over 300 companies on the benefits of flexi working. A staggering 93% of the HR directors surveyed said staff are more likely to bend the rules if they can work from home.

The research demonstrates HR directorsí apparent ambivalence towards flexi working policies. When asked about the benefits of flexi working, HR directors questioned cited greater productivity (47%), reduced stress (62%), higher workforce motivation (60%) and happier workers (50%). Whilst recognising the benefits in theory, it seems they are unwilling to put flexi working into practice for fear that staff will prove untrustworthy and unreliable.

Chris Harris, managing director of Inter-Tel, the business communications provider that commissioned the survey, comments:

ìGiven that flexi working can engender higher productivity and motivation itís very disappointing to see that companies are still sceptical about adopting new ways of using technology because of trust issues. This schizophrenic attitude towards flexi working seems to stem from the fact that HR directors are unaware of how to track the way flexi workers spend their time. When asked how they would monitor the performance and productivity of flexi workers, 18% said they had no idea.î

The survey also revealed that organisations think flexible working would require too much business process re-engineering (24%) or a change in company culture (34%). And 21% of HR directors believe managing remote employees would be too difficult and costly (10%).

Chris Harris, again:

ìHR directors are hesitant to take the time or make the investment to make flexi-working a reality because of the upheaval it may cause. But in reality most companies have the technology already on site they just donít have the know how or time to exploit it. Speaking to a specialist provider will help to allay their fears and find a solution that meets the business needs. î
