Tescos sickness policy - issue still confusing for many UK employers

Research from Adecco and Lemsip

Following on from the Tesco story this morning on changes to Tescoís sickness policy, research from Adecco and Lemsip shows the issue is still confusing for many UK employees.

You are at work, pressure is on to meet a deadline, but you feel unwell....

*Can you go home? - only 18% of people in a recent survey from Adecco and Lemsip have a clear picture of their companyís short-term illness policy.

If you are feeling under the weather, picked up a sporting injury or had a DIY disaster over the weekend do you know where you stand with your employer?

Do employees feel penalised by their boss if they take several days off work due to illness?

*Hardworking heroes - 75 percent of employees continue to work when they have a cold

*Team players - nearly half of respondents continue to work as they do not want to let the team down

*Pay issues - 1 in 3 have concerns about their pay being affected if they take time off when suffering from a cold

The UK has a hard working culture, where people see the need to carry on working regardless. This work ethic is reflected with the UK working some of the longest hours in Europe. Companies need to clarify their short-term illness policies when people start to come down with colds or feel unwell. There is a big gap between a sniffle and a sick note, but UK employees donít seem to know where it lies. Such clarification could reduce sick days lost across a team or department, comments Trisha Philips from Adecco.
