Soccer bust up highlights rights

.

PREMIERSHIP soccer ace Andy Cole is setting a good example for employees who feel bullied by their boss, according to employment law experts.

Blackburn Rovers striker Cole complained to the Professional Footballers Association (PFA) that he has been singled out for unfair treatment by boss Graeme Souness. Soccer chiefs are investigating the row.

Fiona Holdsworth at leading North West law firm Kippax Beaumont Lewis said:

It’s good to see a role model like Andy Cole taking immediate action rather than ignoring a work-related problem or leaving it to fester. It highlights the broader issue of more people standing up for their rights in the workplace and demanding fair treatment.

From an employers perspective it is beneficial to ensure that employees are encouraged to bring matters such as this to their attention to help stamp out a culture of bullying in the workplace. Employees suffering bullying have been found to be less productive at work. Where employers are seen to come down hard on bullies this will be a good defence in claims for constructive dismissal.

Too many employees suffer in silence at the hands of bully-bosses. It’s critical that those experiencing grounds for unfair or constructive dismissal speak out, she added.
