Recruiters at the security service (MI5) focus on language skills

.

Language graduates and students have a second opportunity to question recruitment specialists at the Security Service on the organisationís training and employment prospects for linguists, courtesy of the Graduate Prospectsí live on-line chatroom, Careers Chat Live. The Service will be taking questions from prospective applicants on Wednesday 24 March between 2 and 3pm. They will deal only with questions relating to recruitment, training and careers within the Service.

The Security Service first used Careers Chat Live to ìmeetî prospective candidates earlier this year, and was impressed with the interest from students and graduates. The Service has positions available for those wishing to use their language skills (both mother tongue and learnt skills).

The Careers Chat Live session in January elicited many predictable questions, such as: what kind of background do you look for in candidates? And, can you give any advice on preparation for interview and assessment? To the more probing: do political affiliations have a bearing on applications? Or, is the ëdiscretioní part of the job to facilitate the ability to operate in secrecy, or due to the danger should oneís identity become known? Reinforcing the impact of TV on life, one student even asked how close the BBC series ëSpooksí compared with the reality of the Security Service.

A Recruitment Manager from the Security Service commented: ìWe were impressed with both the volume and quality of questions put to us by prospective candidates in Careers Chat Live in January. Our goal now is to talk more specifically about the roles available for linguists.î
