People management is at the heart of great companies, says new book

’Becoming an Employer of Choice’ by Judith Leery-Joyce.

A book published today has identified the people management practices that will allow any company to be seen as a dynamic, welcoming and enjoyable place to work. Creating an inclusive and inspiring workplace for one’s staff is the secret behind emulating the success of the best British companies.

Becoming an Employer of Choice is written by Judith Leery-Joyce and published by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). The book draws upon the experience of managers from some of the top companies listed in the Sunday Times ’100 Best Companies to Work For’ and includes insights from organisations such as ASDA, Flight Centre, Timpson and CORGI.

According to the book the establishment of a ’great company’ culture is an active and evolving process, able to adapt to changes in the market and the organisation. Such flexibility is based upon the development of a distinctive company principle an attitude and a way of working which informs all aspects of work.

Companies need to ensure that good work is rewarded, that appraisal is formalised and constructive and that the work environment suits the employees. In that way they can benefit from the rewards that follow from recognition as a great company to work for. These include easy recruitment, improved customer relationships and the chance to pick and choose the best employees with the best skills for your organisation.

As author Judith Leery-Joyce comments: It is not worth worrying that other companies might pinch your ideas and products - they definitely will, alongside undercutting your price. Better to utilise your people to the full and go right on leading the field while they struggle to keep up.

There is no magic formula that will transform the workplace overnight. The magic lies in being consistent and actually doing the things others only talk about - over and over again.
