NHS could save millions - 11/2001

.

Britainís ailing National Health Service ñ caught by the double whammy of a serious staffing crisis and a shortage of money ñ is missing out on the chance to save more than 30 million a year, it was claimed recently.

While plans are being laid to leapfrog long waiting lists by sending patients abroad for essential surgery, UK hospitals are scouring the world for recruits willing to work in the NHS to help ease the chronic nursing shortage.

Meanwhile the health service is reliant on highly-paid agency nurses to keep the service ticking over - placing a huge drain on the serviceís resources.

The NHS holds part of the solution to these problems in its own hands, according to on-line recruitment specialist Philip Teare.

As director of Jobsinhealth.co.uk he says the NHS could make total annual savings of 41 million by switching to Internet advertising to fill the 150,000 vacancies it publicises each year.
