New free web-based learning for non-teaching exams staff

Edexcel has introduced a new free web-based learning resource for non-teaching examinations invigilators.

Traditionally, exam invigilators - who sit in during an exam to ensure that they are conducted properly - have been teaching staff. With increased demand on their time to be spent in class, headteachers are now drafting in non-teaching staff and parents or governors to manage examinations, which start on the 17th May.

Edexcel’s new online course will ensure that invigilators not familiar with the Code of Conduct for Examinations can familiarise themselves with the rules before exams start next month. Schools and colleges can it as part of their programme of training: the resource is interactive and entertaining through the use of quizzes and example scenarios for the would-be invigilators to consider.

Different exams have different rules, for example the use of calculators and textbooks, and there are general rules that apply to all examinations: no mobile phones or pagers, no talking etc. This summer Edexcel has over 2,000 different exam papers being sat.

The on-line material can accessed through the training/conduct part of the Edexcel website or by clicking on www.edexcel.org.uk/breakingtheICE

Edexcel is now looking at turning this into a full BTEC qualification later in the year.
