Job creation index (JCI) figures released

61,974 positions created

August sees the first positive increase in job creation since April with a 21% increase from August 2003 with Public sector and Healthcare leading the way in job creation.

September 8th 2004, - Over 61,000 jobs have been created across the 21 key UK industries. Most noticeably there was a welcome rise in job creation within the Public sector after the recent negativity surrounding the sector’s development. The Healthcare sector surfaced as a key front runner with in excess of 2300 jobs being created in August 2004, according to the Mandis/Adecco Job Creation Index (JCI).

This month also saw the continued growth in the Paper, Packaging and Printing sector. This industry has been going from strength to strength in 2004 with August being the seventh consecutive month of growth.

The JCI figures are determined by comparing the number of jobs created within UK industrial sectors each month with the number of jobs created for the corresponding month in the previous year. The JCI figure shows individual industry performance, measured as a percentage above or below the number of jobs created from a year ago. From these figures, the following trends have been highlighted:

August’s Front Runners
Paper, Packaging and Printing - With a JCI of 2358 the printing industry continues to led the way as the front runner in job creation

Leisure and Hospitality - The good weather and Summer holidays has benefited this sector as August sees 6000 jobs created in this sector, a massive 194% increase on this time last year

Healthcare - August has seen a significant boost for this sector with a JCI of 1861, an increase of 2233 jobs compared to 2003

August’s Chasers
Media, Advertising and Marketing - After seeing a spectacular rise in job creation over the last three months, this sector saw a return to the lower figures seen in the first half of 2004 with the JCI at -100

Finance and Banking sector - This sector suffered a decline in job creation this month with a JCI of -97

Richard MacMillan, Managing Director of Adecco UK and Ireland said: This month sees some very encouraging growth in key areas such as Public Services and Healthcare. This is encouraging given recent negative press surrounding the development of these sectors and shows that the second half of 2004 could see a turnaround for these key areas of industry. August is traditionally a strong month for job creation. However this month has been particularly healthy with best overall job creation since April.
