In response to the recent prediction by the Association of Technology Staffing Companies (ATSCo), please find below the response from Keith Robinson, commercial director for totaljobs.com, one of the UK’s leading jobbards:

The industry body ATSCo is predicting that the web will lose its dominance in recruitment advertising in the IT sector - yet we strongly disagree with this claim. Online recruitment is currently experiencing a dramatic growth. According to Onrec.com, in the first three quarters of 2003, online recruitment advertising revenues increased by 43 per cent, year on year.

In comparison, paper-based recruitment advertising has actually fallen. According to last year’s Keynote e-Recruitment report the use of national newspapers for recruitment advertising has decreased by 18.6 per cent over the last three years. Advertising in specialist trade publications has fallen by 19 per cent over the same period.

Companies must learn to recognise the benefits of recruiting via a variety of channels - from local newspapers to recruitment fairs. Online recruitment will remain a key part of IT companies’ recruitment strategies. IT job sites are now one of the most mature areas of online recruitment and as the IT industry becomes more automated the Internet will continue to provide the ideal platform to recruit from.
